AIESEC's 60th in Brussels
At the heart of where the European Union now stands, AIESEC has celebrated 60 years of
fostering cultural understanding amongst nations, modeling the vision of the would-be European
Union. Over 300 leaders from business and civil society
along with past and present AIESEC members gathered for this event in Brussels, which was
the home of AIESEC’s international secretariat for many decades.
The event was an extraordinary networking and creative gathering, balanced with nostalgia,
friendship, tangible conversations and fun.
A graphic facilitator captured the key themes of discussions throughout the day, and a high
quality agenda was developed in cooperation with two leading leadership development organizations.
Alumni Engagement- one of the highlights of the event!
• Alumnus Martin Bean (PAI 86/87) was the
chair of the celebration
• Alumni from two leadership development organizations Center for Creative
Leadership (Rudi Plettinx – AIESEC in Belgium
80s) and Future Considerations (James Shaw – AI 97/98 and Jarda Dokoupil – AI 06/07) supported
the agenda development and facilitation
• Alumni hosted working groups on Sunday: Jean Choplin (PAI 49/50) about
International Alumni Foundation; Bernd Thomas (PAI 58/59) about
Alumni Policy; Hiro Kinashi (AI – 68/69) about
Alumni Associations

Why they value AIESEC
“You have been a front runner of globalization and the values that your organization
embodies are more relevant than ever. Cross-cultural understanding and entrepreneurship education
contribute to a peaceful development of the world.”
Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of
the European Commission recognized AIESEC’s relevance in his opening speech
“Skills of leadership, communication, cultural understanding, problem solving, team
building, ladies and gentleman those are the skills that employers are demanding in the 21st
Century to be relevant. Those are the skills that AIESEC has always taught and trust me, those
skills are just as needed and just in demand today as they were right in the very beginning of
AIESEC.”

Education Products Group at Microsoft Corporation; PAI 1986/87

I am an AIESEC alumni |

Mairi Jüriska, Director for Western Europe and North America 2006/07
Mairi just stepped out of AIESEC into the business world in 2007. She started her
involvement in leadership and management roles right after one year of joining AIESEC back in 2002.
Mairi gained a great amount of knowledge in leadership and organizational management in her
five years long AIESEC career. She sees AIESEC as an international environment, which combines very
diverse people. Because of this, she sees as one of the main challenges of being in AIESEC is
working with a wide range of people and bringing them together towards a common goal. As a
responsible leader, her goal was to provide her teammates with a working environment that is a
place for individual growth combined with obtaining the best results for the organization.
In her final year in AIESEC Mairi was the Director for Western Europe and North America
(WENA) in AIESEC International. This was the best time of her life so far because of the kind of
lifestyle she had; she was in charge of 15 WENA countries and traveled to 23 countries during her
term. Thanks to the nature of the job, she found her way to adapt with different situations in very
quickly.
After Mairi left AIESEC, she became the CEO of Health Estonia Foundation in Estonia. As a
successful young woman, Mairi feels that AIESEC is a place full of opportunities. “If you choose to
grab them, you will grow beyond your imagination,” she said. Mairi believes, “AIESEC is more than
anything, an environment which has the ability to accommodate all types of people, takes excellent
care of them and one day send them off to all the corners of the world for purposeful action.”
Mairi is just one of 800,000 AIESEC alumni from 60 years of AIESEC’s history.
